The treatment explained

What is CEREC?

CEREC is a system for designing and making ceramic crowns, onlays and inlays in the practice while you wait. Instead of putty impressions, a temporary crown and a second visit a couple of weeks later, your restoration is usually designed, made and fitted in a single appointment.

After preparing the tooth, we take a 3D scan, design the restoration on screen to fit your bite, and a milling machine carves it from a solid block of tooth-coloured ceramic. It’s then polished and bonded to your tooth.

A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when a tooth is badly broken or weakened. An onlay or inlay covers only the damaged part, so more of your natural tooth is kept. CEREC restorations are metal-free and tooth-coloured.

Why CEREC

One visit instead of weeks of waiting

Lab-made crowns usually mean putty impressions, a plastic temporary and a second visit weeks later. With CEREC we scan, design and mill your restoration while you wait.

No putty

A 3D camera scans your tooth in seconds.

No temporary

Your restoration is milled from a solid ceramic block and fitted the same day.

Keeps more tooth

An onlay covers only the damaged part, so it often saves more natural tooth than a full crown.

FAQs

Same-Day CEREC Crowns and Onlays: your questions answered

What is CEREC?

A CAD/CAM system that designs and mills ceramic restorations in the practice, so most are fitted in a single appointment.

What’s the difference between an onlay and a crown?

A crown covers the whole tooth. An onlay covers only the part that needs it, so more of your natural tooth is kept.

How long do CEREC restorations last?

Ceramic restorations are very durable. We guarantee ours for two years if you keep up with check-ups and hygiene visits.

Can CEREC be used on front teeth?

Yes. CEREC makes crowns and veneers for front and back teeth.

Are CEREC restorations metal-free?

Yes. They’re tooth-coloured ceramic with no metal.

Which dentists provide CEREC crowns?

Our dentists design and fit CEREC crowns in the practice, including Dr Samantha Le Sueur, who has a special interest in CEREC single-visit crowns, and Dr Tom Bray.
