Problems we can help with
Toothache and swelling
Pain that keeps you awake, or swelling around a tooth or in your gum.
Broken teeth and lost crowns
A chipped or broken tooth, a lost filling, or a crown that’s come off.
Knocked-out teeth
An adult tooth knocked out in an accident needs care within the hour.
What to do now
- Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently and push it back in if you can, or keep it in milk, then come straight in.
- Broken tooth: keep any pieces, rinse with warm water and avoid chewing on that side.
- Lost crown: keep it safe and bring it with you. Don’t glue it back yourself.
- Toothache: take painkillers as directed on the pack. Don’t put aspirin on your gum.
- Bleeding after an extraction: bite firmly on clean, damp gauze or a cloth for 20 minutes.
When to go to hospital
Go to the Emergency Department at the General Hospital or call 999 if swelling affects your breathing, swallowing or vision, or you have a serious injury to your face.
