What is an anti-snoring device?
Snoring happens when the soft tissues in your throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway. An anti-snoring device is a custom-made appliance, similar to a thin mouthguard, that you wear at night.
It holds your lower jaw in position, or slightly forward, which helps keep your airway open while you sleep, so snoring is reduced. Ours is the Sleepwell device, made to fit your teeth from a scan or impressions and fitted by Dr Thomas Bray. It’s adjustable, so you can fine-tune it yourself.
Snoring can sometimes be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea, where breathing stops during sleep, so we screen you first and refer you for a sleep study if needed.

Why treat snoring

Snoring is caused by soft tissue vibrating in a narrowed airway. Broken sleep leaves you tired and low on energy, and it affects the people you live with too.

Snoring can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea, where breathing stops during sleep. If you might be at risk, Dr Bray will refer you for further tests or arrange a private home sleep study.

Is it comfortable to wear?
Yes. It’s custom made with a soft lining and allows side-to-side jaw movement.
How long does it take to get used to?
Usually no more than a couple of nights. Some people notice more or less saliva at first.
Can I use it if I wear dentures?
Often, if you have enough teeth in each jaw. We’ll assess you and advise.
Will it cure my snoring?
There’s no permanent cure for snoring, but the device treats it every night you wear it.
Can I close my mouth while wearing it?
Yes, although most people sleep with their lips slightly apart anyway.
